My Mother had to attend Hull A&E on a saturday evening. While the current apperance of the A&E has a lot to be desired the car she received was second to none.

I have come here with my girlfriend, she has slit wrists that most likely need stitches not to mention the probable immediate psychological care to go with it. We have been waiting for a doctor for 3 hours, nobody has seen a doctor for at least 45 minutes. We were only 4/5th in the queue to be seen in the 1st place. What a bloody waste of space this side of the hospital is. Emergency means need fast important help and attention. 3 hours and still waiting is unacceptable. I am shocked and appalled at the complete failure in organisation and general care. Serious reformations are needed to improve this waste of tax payers money. Mission failed!!

I took my son to A and E with abdominal pain which I suspected might be appendicitis. He was quickly assessed by a nurse and then a junior doctor who decided he should be admitted for observation. We were quickly taken up to Ward 130E and my son was shown immediately to his bed. Although we arrived at a busy time of day, approx. 8am, he was further assessed by his nurse for that day and a more senior doctor. My son was assessed several more times over that day by the medical team and it was decided he should have exploratory surgery the next day. My son's surgery was planned for Theatre 3, which I was told is the "emergency theatre" and I was impressed that surgery for children was given priority and that my son was first for theatre that morning. The theatre team were excellent, with the ODA even making my son laugh just before being anaesthetised. As soon as the surgery was finished my husband and I were informed of the results of the surgery, confirmed as appendicitis, and after a further short wait we were allowed to be with our son in the recovery area. The recovery nurse was extremely attentive, kind and patient with my groggy and slightly unco-operative son. Overall, I was extremely happy with the standard of care my son received from Mr Daniels and his medical team. At almost 12 years old, my son was treated with respect and his opinion was sought on all decisions that were made. The nursing team on the ward and the team working in theatre and recovery that day are also to be commended. The only negative point was that the parental facilities weren't great and as a result were hardly used by any of the parents.

Review of Acute Medical Unit

I know we are just victims of a system that is under great strain and do not have any complaints about the staff who work extremely hard in very challenging circumstances but our recent experience with my elderly aunt was very concerning. Having being admitted at 6pm on the Friday evening she was left to wait in drafty cold corridors before she was seen by a doctor and again made to wait in the corridor until her results were available. She was then discharged at 12.30am and again had to wait a in corridor outside the Major ward until an ambulance was made available at 3.50am. By this time my aunt was exhausted and anxious and ended up back at her care home in a worse state than she left. I realise beds are short but surely to send an frail 86 year old home with breathing difficulties and physical disabilities, on a snowy night in sub zero temperatures is not acceptable. She is lucky not to have sufferd hypothermia. Again I have no issue with the staff who are making the best of, what must be, soul destroying working conditions.

The nurses and all staff who I had contact with on this ward were truly brilliant. Nothing was too much bother and they really made me feel like we were being well cared for. Dr pathak was also friendly, professional and very approachable. I don't have a bad word to say. The only thing I feel could be improved was the admission process. I waited until 8pm to get the go ahead to come in for surgery the next day. This made organising a lift etc difficult and I would imagine for people with child care etc to consider this wouldn't be easy. Whilst I do appreciate that it's hard to know what beds will be available, it's hard for the people at home who don't know much about what's going on and wether they will even be in at all. It was more nerve racking for me than the actual procedure.

we arrived late for our appointment due to ambulance transit. no one was available to see us. reception area was empty. thanks to a supervisor mrs. vanessa beharrell who tracked down a consultant we were able to make the appointment. we now await treatment. casenote no.r 097808.

I was on the Short Stay ward of AAU and recieved great care from hard working and dedicated staff, I could see they have a lot to put up with and they patiently dealt with difficult situations

Ward ID 0611 AAU My 79 yr old mother was admitted with deteriorating Parkinsons disease and cardiac arrhythmia. Following drug administration in A and E resus she was transferred to AAU. After a tiring day she was x rayed at 1am. She asked for some help to change position in the night and the was refused by the ? HCA. Chewing gum concerned for her back. After an overnight stay she was not assisted to wash and had been hot uncomfortable after the previous day. We were also alarmed when one HCA was giving us advise 're how to deal with a drug query. She was discharged after her cardiac issue was stabilised with no concern for the more holistic problems , mobility and home situation. We did discuss this with the nurse practitioner who was very helpful in organising physio and referral. My sister and I virtually carried our mother into our car took her home to wash her ,exhausted and frail. We are nurses and understand how very busy it can be in such a department and how it can be difficult to assist patients to change position safely for all concerned . We however were alarmed by some of the unprofessional attitude. The staff nurses in AAU were very polite but very very busy.
